Marrakech Day Trip to Essaouira Description :
We meet with you at your accommodation in Marrakech to begin the approx 2.5hr inland and coastal journey south to Essaouira. Leaving the suburbs of Marrakech, you head out onto the open road offering panoramic views of the remote life of those who work the land. The opulence of Marrakech is replaced by scenes of a much simpler way of life and a landscape more forbidding yet still beautiful. Goat herders can be seen in the distance and it is always a photography moment if you spot the goats perched in the Argan trees.
On route to Essaouira you visit a women’s Argan oil co-operative & artisan shop for an insight into the hand production of one of Morocco’s largest exports the Internationally acclaimed culinary and cosmetic oil often referred to as Berber or liquid gold.
On arriving in the blue and white shabby chic artists town of Essaouira before mid-day we make our way into the UNESCO World Heritage Medina to explore the souks and to shop for lunch in the fish market. Time thereafter to relax on a rustic rooftop terrace and to await your fresh fish being cooked and brought to your table.
After lunch enjoy beach activities such as a short camel ride for example or explore the historic ramparts where film director Orson Wells filmed Scenes for ‘Othello’ and more recently where the series ‘Game of Thrones’ was filmed, overlooking the sweeping bay and harbor with its iconic cobalt blue fishing boats
Before departing Essaouira you take an additional drive along the coast to the sand dune area of Diabet for refreshments in the novel Jimi Hendrix Café, a rustic homage to the musician. Diabet was once a hippy colony where Jimi Hendrix lived for a short period in time and his association with Musical Essaouira is one many Southern Moroccans are proud of.
